Everywhere we look we are surrounded by some of the most terrible and horrific images and events that are taking place around the world.

In the news we are constantly bombarded with images of countries in turmoil and distress with images of women and children crying over the loss of their father, brother or husband. As though that isn’t enough we are also continuously exposed to updates of the ‘newest’ natural disaster; an earthquake, tsunami, hurricane.

I think it is fair to say that for a large majority of the population these images have stopped shocking us to the point where we are no longer moved, there is always someone, somewhere suffering and it is almost as though we have been spoon fed these images for so long and at such a dramatic pace that now it is almost a norm, something we know and expect.

Ok, I am getting to my point, so the other day I was surfing facebook and the strangest article popped up on my news feed, 21 Pictures That Will Restore Your Faith In Humanity. As you can possibly image I was interested, it wasn’t the usual – please donate XXX or this person will not make it another 24 hours or please help this poor cat out of a well, it was an article that was telling me that despite the traumatic events that are taking place around the world, there are a few people out there who have managed to hold on to their humanity.

It was of rioters and riot police taking a moment to celebrate the birth of a human being, Christians who showed up at a gay pride parade to apologize for homophobia in the Church, of an athlete who stopped to help an injured competitor across the finish line and a man giving his shoes to a homeless girl in Rio de Janeiro. These are but a few out of the 21 however I noticed a very strange event taking place. I noticed that the article was affecting me in an emotional way, instead of being thrown pictures of hate I was being shown pictures of respect, kindness, selflessness, faith and above all love.

It is funny, in a world where we are all being taught fear and fed pictures of despair, that it is the imageries of hope and compassion that stir up the deepest emotions within us.

The relationship between PR practitioners and Journalists in Saudi Arabia

Last week, the Council of Ministers in Saudi urged all government departments and service organizations to appoint spokesmen to provide the media with necessary information and clarifications

The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, also urged public organizations to respond to media queries and respond to negative reports and  they should also open channels of communication and cooperation with the media and reply to all their questions and clarifications and use their websites for the purpose  .

We consider this move very good news in clarifying information for journalists and the development of the relationship between journalists and the public sector.

This decision confirms the following:

  • Dealing with the media is one of the most important responsibilities of any public relations department
  • The media represents a primary channel for communicating with all of the government departments stakeholders.
  • The media also has the potential to do immense harm to the government reputation if not managed professionally.

In years past, the public relations functionality was envisaged by both the private and public sector institutions and organizations as a luxury rather than a necessity.  This was one of the historical challenges encountered by the public relations industry in Saudi Arabia. However, this foggy and obscure outlook has recently started to clear out.

Despite this improvement, however, not all companies or government departments are on the same degree of understanding of how to optimize the use of public relations. For example, the aim of some private sector corporations or government departments from a PR activity is to try to sell their products and services indirectly through press releases solely. Accordingly, you find them sending scores of press releases to the media, although most of these releases are not even worth publishing.
